Is your chicken good for you?
I have learned in my quest to eat healthier to look at the labels on everything and I mean everything including that simple package of chicken breasts on sale at your grocery store!
Now come on, what in the world would be in a package of chicken except chicken? How about water? A lot of packages say water added and even fewer packages are more "truthfull" and say something like "this package has been enhanced with 15% broth".
Now if you have ever looked at the label of a typical package of broth its loaded full of sodium!!! Changes are your package of chicken has more sodium then you would even think about as high as 15% of your daily allowance of sodium in a single serving, and you haven't even added your own sauce or seasoning yet!!
Why would someone fill a chicken full of sodium laden water? To compete with the fresher, juicier organic and natural products you can find on the market today!
Basically what they have done is "brine" your chicken for you.. Brining is the process of soaking a piece of meat in salt water.. The salt helps the meat draw in the water resulting in a more tender and juicer final product.
They have basically taken their mass market product and "enhanced" it to compete with the other better chickens on the market.. Almost sounds like a hearing about steroids and baseball doesn't it?
Sodium is one of the main things we need to cut down our intake of but in reality most of the prepackaged items right down to the canned veggies are packed full of it, the last thing you need to do is worry about how much sodium is in the chicken your about to cook!
